WHAT IS SIN?

lWebster dictionary

SIN, n.

1.      The voluntary departure of a moral agent from a known rule of rectitude or duty, prescribed by God; any voluntary transgression of the divine law, or violation of a divine command; a wicked act; iniquity.

In the English language the word “sin” is an abstract word, and many people give different definitions of sin. For many, sin has become an irrelevant word. Everyone has their own moral standards. These days, government officials may declare in the law of the land that sin is no longer sin and persecute those who disagree with them. People lose their anchor in the stormy sea of moral life. They no longer have the foundation of what is right and what is wrong.
A whole generation is losing its guidelines in this chaotic life. And the main street church is going along with moral corruption.

I decided to start my own journey to find the truth about the origin and nature of sin. If you are listening to me right now, join me in this journey to find the truth that sets us free.

GO BACK TO THE ORIGIN OF THE WORD WHICH IS IN THE SCRIPTURES

The Hebrew language is a language of concrete thinking. Every word is tied to something that a person can see, feel and connect in his life through experience.
The first time the word “sin” occurs is in Genesis chapter 4, verse 7. It is the Hebrew word חטּאת, ḥaṭṭā'th, “a missing,”.
This definition gives us a perfect picture of the scene where we have a target, a person who has to hit the target, and the action of the person who hits or misses the target. To understand now exactly what sin represents, we have to find out:
  1. What is the target?
  2. Who is making the hit or miss?
  3. Why and how are these hits and misses happening?

Yeshua’s last words to His disciples before His death; His last will for His children.

John 16:7-8 MKJV
(7)  But I tell you the truth, it is expedient for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you. But if I depart, I will send Him to you.
(8)  And when that One comes, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment.

The One Who comes is the Holy Spirit. He convicts the world concerning sin. Look, it takes a revelation from the Holy Spirit to even understand what sin is and to be convicted of it.

The Great Conflict: Light vs. Darkness

John 1:1-5 The Scriptures 1998+
(1)  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with Elohim, and the Word was Elohim.
(2)  He was in the beginning with Elohim.
(3) All came to be through Him, and without Him not even one came to be that came to be.
(4) In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
(5) And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:9-11 The Scriptures 1998+
(9)  He was the true Light, which enlightens every man, coming into the world.
(10)  He was in the world, and the world came to be through Him, and the world did not know Him.
(11)He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him

John 1:14 The Scriptures 1998+
(14)  And the Word became flesh and pitched His tent among us, and we saw His esteem, esteem as of an only brought-forth of a father, complete in favour and truth.

John 3:16-21 The Scriptures 1998+
(16)  “For Elohim so loved the world that He gave His only brought-forth Son, so that everyone who believes in Him should not perish but possess everlasting life.
(17)  “For Elohim did not send His Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
(18)  “He who believes in Him is not judged, but he who does not believe is judged already, because he has not believed in the Name of the only brought-forth Son of Elohim.
(19)  “And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were wicked.
(20)  “For everyone who is practising evil matters hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
(21)  “But the one doing the truth comes to the light, so that his works are clearly seen, that they have been wrought in Elohim.”

This is the biggest question: What did Yeshua come to save us from?

·         From satan?

·         From sin?

·         From death?

When did this great conflict begin? The conflict between Light and Darkness?

Genesis 1:1-5 The Scriptures 1998+
(1)  In the beginning Elohim created the heavens and the earth.
(2)  And the earth came to be formless and empty, and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of Elohim was moving on the face of the waters.
(3)  And Elohim said, “Let light come to be,” and light came to be.
(4)  And Elohim saw the light, that it was good. And Elohim separated the light from the darkness.
(5)   And Elohim called the light ‘day’ and the darkness He called ‘night.’ And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, the first day.
-----------------

Where did darkness come from? Why in these verses does it not say that God created darkness?

What is Darkness?

Webster dictionary
Darkness
D'ARKNESS, n. 1. Absence of light.

You cannot have less or more darkness; you can have only more or less light. Darkness is the state where is no light.

In terms of physics, an object is said to be dark when it absorbs photons, causing it to appear dim compared to other objects. For example, a matte black paint does not reflect much visible light and appears dark, whereas white paint reflects much light and appears bright

Physical Light and Darkness vs. Spiritual Light and Darkness

From the Scriptures above we see that Yeshua and His disciples describe spiritual darkness. Then there is the question: what is the relation between spiritual and physical darkness? Did God create them? Or do they have another origin?

1 John 1:5 MKJV
(5)  And this is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.
1 John 1:6-7 MKJV
(6)  If we say that we have fellowship with Him and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
(7)  But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

From the context we see that he is talking about spiritual light and spiritual darkness.  There is a connection between darkness and sin, light and righteousness. Let us explore this connection deeper.

The physical universe is a reflection of the heavenly realm

God uses the elements of our world to reveal to us His Kingdom
We know that even before the first element of the physical universe was created, there were heavenly realms which were populated with intelligent creations. We call them angelic beings, or heavenly hosts.
Job 38:4-7 The Scriptures 1998+
(4)  Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
(5)  Who set its measurements, if you know? Or who stretched the line upon it?
(6)  Upon what were its foundations sunk? Or who laid its corner-stone,
(7)  when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of Elohim shouted for joy?

Here is an example of how God Himself uses pictorial language to express the heavenly beings, “sons of Elohim,” with the “morning stars.” This is the code word which represents these created beings in our physical universe.

When God created the first man, He created him in His image.

Genesis 1:26 The Scriptures 1998+
(26)           And Elohim said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the livestock, and over all the earth and over all the creeping creatures that creep on the earth.”

If we look from the perspective that the physical universe is designed to reflect things in heaven, we have to investigate how the physical darkness was reflecting the spiritual darkness.

As we see in the first verses in the Scriptures

Genesis 1:1-5 The Scriptures 1998+
(1)  In the beginning Elohim created the heavens and the earth.
(2)  And the earth came to be formless and empty, and darkness was on the face of the deep.

·         God is Light and in Him there is no darkness (1 John 1:5 )

·         If God is the opposite of darkness, how did darkness come to be?

·         How do you understand the next verses about darkness in the light of the verse above?

Psalm 104:19-20 MKJV

(19)  He appointed the moon for seasons; the sun knows its going down.

(20)  You make darkness, and it is night, in which all the beasts of the forest creep forth.

Isaiah 45:5-7 MKJV

(5)  I am Jehovah, and there is none else, no God besides Me; I clothed you, though you have not known Me;

(6)  that they may know from the rising of the sun, and to the sunset, that there is none besides Me. I am Jehovah, and there is none else;

(7)  forming the light and creating darkness; making peace and creating evil. I Jehovah do all these things.

We see two different kinds of darkness in place

·         Spiritual darkness that God is not and did not create

·         Physical darkness that God created to reflect the spiritual darkness that already existed before the creation of the physical universe.

Therefore, God is telling us through his creation about many spiritual things that happened and for us to find out through observation.

Romans 1:20 The Scriptures 1998+
(20)  For since the creation of the world His invisible qualities have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, both His everlasting power and Mightiness, for them to be without excuse,

Facts about natural light

·         Light cannot be seen with the human eye

·         Light is a type of energy

·         Light is a beam of energy that moves in a wave.

·         Light waves come in many sizes. The size of the wave, the distance between two wave peaks, is called a wavelength.

·         The wavelengths of the light that most people can see ranges from 400 to 700 billionths of a meter.

·         The human eye needs light to see.

·         Light travels very fast and in a straight line, until something bends it. The straight waves of light are called light rays.

·         Plants convert light energy from the sun into food. This process is called photosynthesis.

·         Nothing can travel faster than light

Light cannot be seen with human eye; we only see its reflection

1 John 3:6 MKJV

Everyone who abides in Him does not sin. Everyone who sins has not seen Him nor known Him.

1 John 4:12 MKJV

(12)  No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwells in us, and His love is perfected in us.

”Light cannot be seen with the human eye; we only see its reflection

A common Physics demonstration involves the directing of a laser beam across the room. With the room lights off, the laser is turned on and its beam is directed towards a plane mirror. The presence of the light beam cannot be detected as it travels towards the mirror. Furthermore, the light beam cannot be detected after reflecting off the mirror and traveling through the air towards a wall in the room. The only locations where the presence of the light beam can be detected are at the location where the light beam strikes the mirror and at the location where the light beam strikes a wall. At these two locations, a portion of the light in the beam is reflecting off the objects (the mirror and the wall) and traveling towards the students' eyes. And since the detection of objects is dependent upon light traveling from that object to the eye, these are the only two locations where one can detect the light beam. But in between the laser and the mirror, the light beam cannot be detected. There is nothing present in the region between the laser and the mirror that is capable of reflecting the light of the beam to students' eyes.“

But then the phenomenal occurred (as it often does in a Physics class). A mister is used to spray water into the air in the region where the light beam is moving. Small suspended droplets of water are capable of reflecting light from the beam to your eye. It is only due to the presence of the suspended water droplets that the light path from the laser to the mirror could be detected. When light from the laser (a luminous object) strikes the suspended water droplets (the illuminated object), the light is reflected to students' eyes. The path of the light beam can now be seen. With light, there can be sight. But without light, there would be no sight.

Light vs. darkness

God is revealed to us through many things. He is true light; we cannot see Him as He is. But we can see Him through the reflection of the visible and invisible world. Even in Heaven the whole angelic host sees only the reflection of Him as much they can see and comprehend their experiences of God.Because darkness is the opposite of light, there is no reflection of any light in the darkness. You cannot see anything in the darkness.

Light is a beam of energy that moves in a wave.

Elohim gives the energy of life, like a beam of energy for everything.

Genesis 2:7 The Scriptures 1998+

(7)  And יהוה Elohim formed the man out of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils breath of life. And the man became a living being.

Revelation 22:5 The Scriptures 1998+

(5)  And night shall be no more, and they shall have no need of a lamp or the light of the sun, because יהוה Elohim shall give them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.

·         Light has its source

·         The source of light gives up its usable energy

·         Darkness does not have a source

·         Darkness does not give energy, but only absorbs what light is given

The Prism, Rainbow, and Colors

Light waves come in many different sizes. The size of the wave, or the distance between two wave peaks, is called a wavelength.

Genesis 9:11-17 The Scriptures 1998+

( (13)  “I shall set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.

(14)  “And it shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud,

(15)  and I shall remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh, and never again let the waters become a flood to destroy all flesh.

Rainbow – Symbol of God’s grace

A rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky.

White light separates into different colors on entering the raindrop due to dispersion, causing red light to be refracted less than blue light.

Most light that we interact with is in the form of white light, which contains many or all of these wavelength ranges within them. Shining white light through a prism causes the wavelengths to bend at slightly different angles due to optical refraction. The resulting light is, therefore, split across the visible color spectrum.

White light vs. dark (black)

“When all the wavelengths of the visible light spectrum strike your eye at the same time, white is perceived. The sensation of white is not the result of a single color of light. Rather, the sensation of white is the result of a mixture of two or more colors of light. Thus, visible light - the mix of ROYGBIV - is sometimes referred to as white light. Technically speaking, white is not a color at all - at least not in the sense that there is a light wave with a wavelength that is characteristic of white. Rather, white is the combination of all the colors of the visible light spectrum. If all the wavelengths of the visible light spectrum give the appearance of white, then none of the wavelengths would lead to the appearance of black. Once more, black is not actually a color. Technically speaking, black is merely the absence of the wavelengths of the visible light spectrum. So when you are in a room with no lights and everything around you appears black, it means that there are no wavelengths of visible light striking your eye as you sight at the surroundings.”

White robes in Heaven

Revelation 6:9-11 The Scriptures 1998+

(9)  And when He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the beings of those having been slain for the Word of Elohim and for the witness which they held,

(10)  and they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Master, set-apart and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”

(11)  And there was given to each one a white robe, and they were told that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brothers, who would be killed as they were, was completed.

Revelation 19:7-8 The Scriptures 1998+

(7)  “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him praise, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife prepared herself.”

(8)  And to her it was given to be dressed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteousnesses of the set-apart ones.

Revelation 19:14 The Scriptures 1998+

(14)  And the armies in the heaven, dressed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.

Elohim is the Light; He is the source of Light.

Every saint will have a robe that reflects His light in fullness. Our everyday life is the reflection of His light.

Revelation 3:4-6 The Scriptures 1998+

(4)  “Nevertheless, you have a few names in Sardis who have not defiled their garments. And they shall walk with Me in white, because they are worthy.

(5)  “He who overcomes shall be dressed in white robes, and I shall by no means blot out his name from the Book of Life, but I shall confess his name before My Father and before His messengers.

(6)  “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.”

 Revelation 3:15-18 The Scriptures 1998+

(15)  “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I would that you were cold or hot.

(16)  “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am going to vomit you out of My mouth.

(17)  “Because you say, ‘Rich I am, and I am made rich, and need none at all,’ and do not know that you are wretched, and pitiable, and poor, and blind, and naked.

(18)  “I advise you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire,1 so that you become rich; and white garments, so that you become dressed, so that the shame of your nakedness might not be shown; and anoint your eyes with ointment, so that you see.

The human eye needs light to see.
The only way we can see light is through our eyes. The same way we have to have spiritual eyes to see God who is the Light and all His kingdom.

John 3:3 The Scriptures 1998+

(3)  יהושע answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born from above, he is unable to see the reign of Elohim.”

Revelation 3:17-18 The Scriptures 1998+

(17)  “Because you say, ‘Rich I am, and I am made rich, and need none at all,’ and do not know that you are wretched, and pitiable, and poor, and blind, and naked.

(18)  “I advise you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire,1 so that you become rich; and white garments, so that you become dressed, so that the shame of your nakedness might not be shown; and anoint your eyes with ointment, so that you see. Footnote: 1Ps. 19:10, Ps. 119:72 & 127, Prov. 30:5.

Light travels very fast and in a straight line, until something bends it. The straight waves of light are called light rays.

The path of light is always straight.

John 1:23 The Scriptures 1998+

(23)  He (Yohanan/John the Baptist) said, “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of יהוה,’ as the prophet Yeshayahu said.”

Hebrews 12:12-14 MKJV

(12)  Because of this, straighten up the hands which hang down and the enfeebled knees.

(13)  And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way, but let it rather be healed.

(14)  Follow peace with all, and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord;

·         Plants convert light energy from the sun into food. This process is called photosynthesis.

·         Light brings life.

·         Light brings the energy of life.

·         Light is the most important part of all living on this earth, the same way it is with God – Who is the Light important to our lives: physical and spiritual.

·         Without light, all living organisms die, and without His light we all are spiritually dead.

What is the darkness?

·         Darkness is a state of being: spiritual or physical.

·         Darkness does not give out light but only absorbs it.

·         Darkness does not give life, but life will die in darkness.

·         God did not create the spiritual darkness but created physical darkness, which reflects spiritual one.

·         As black is the absence of any light reflection, so is darkness the absence of light which reflects God

What does the Scriptures say about darkness?

 ·         Matthew 4:15-16 MKJV  "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the nations!  (16)  The people who sat in darkness saw a great Light; and Light has sprung up to those who sat in the region and shadow of death."

 ·         Matthew 6:23 The Scriptures 1998+  (23)  “But if your eye is evil,1 all your body shall be darkened. If, then, the light that is within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!         Footnote: 1This is a Hebrew idiom – a good eye means to be generous, while an evil eye means to be stingy.

 ·         Matthew 8:11-12 MKJV  And I say to you that many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of Heaven.  (12)  But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

·         Matthew 10:27 MKJV  What I tell you in darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear, proclaim on the housetops

 ·         Matthew 22:11-14 MKJV  And the king coming in to look over the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment.  (12)  And he said to him, Friend, how did you come in here without having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.  (13)  Then the king said to the servants, Bind him hand and foot and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.  (14)  For many are called, but few chosen.

·         Matthew 25:28-30 MKJV  Therefore take the talent from him and give it to him who has ten talents.  (29)  For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will abound. But from him who has not, even that which he has shall be taken away from him.  (30)  And throw the unprofitable servant into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

 ·         Matthew 27:45-46 MKJV  And from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.  (46)  And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? That is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?

Luke 22:52-54 MKJV  And Jesus said to the chief priests and commanders of the temple, and the elders, who had come to Him, Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and staves?  (53)  When I was with you in the temple daily, you did not stretch out your hand on Me. But this is your hour, and the authority of the darkness.  (54)  And laying hold on Him, they led Him away and brought Him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.

l1Thessalonians 5:3-5 MKJV  For when they shall say, Peace and safety! Then sudden destruction comes on them, as travail upon a woman with child. And they shall not escape.  (4)  But you, brothers, are not in darkness, that the Day should overtake you like a thief.  (5)  You are all the sons of light and the sons of the day. We are not of the night, or of darkness.

 l1 Peter 2:9 MKJV  But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for possession, so that you might speak of the praises of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

lJude 1:11-13 MKJV  Woe to them! For they went the way of Cain, and gave themselves up to the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Korah.  (12)  These are sunken rocks in your love feasts, feasting together with you; feeding themselves without fear; waterless clouds being carried about by winds; fruitless autumn trees, having died twice, having been plucked up by the roots;  (13)  wild waves of the sea foaming up their shames; wandering stars for whom blackness of darkness has been kept forever.

What is spiritual darkness?

lIt is a place that is separate from the Kingdom of Heaven.

lIt is the place where all sinners are.

lOuter darkness is the permanent place for sinners.

lThere is no eternal light and eternal life in spiritual darkness, there is only damnation.

Sin is darkness

lSin is a part of the kingdom of darkness

lSin is in conflict with Light.

lSin is the result where there is no Light

lSin separates from light and life

lSin brings death first physically then spiritually.

lDeath is a separation.

lAs darkness is the absence of light, so is death the absence of life.
